The Haunted

Updated: Nov 1, 2020

Mistakes in our past can haunt our mind, body, and spirit if closure was never reached. Closure is a concept that is necessary to move forward. Closure is something that truly can not be given by someone else. Yes an individual’s actions my assist in the journey of closure, but closure is not reached till one truly can let go and walk away with whatever lesson was provided. Mistakes can in fact be powerful lessons when a situation is looked at objectively. Some individuals do not need tough life lessons in order to learn, but unfortunately some of us do. Most people have made a critical mistake or a questionable decision. Some move on rather quickly and keep it moving. While others ruminate over negative events and allow these memories to mentally and even physically haunt and prey on their happiness. Here are some steps that may help in burying old skeletons and binding away ghost of the past.

1. Accept that whatever happened, happened. You can’t reverse time and choose a different path. Scream, cry, break something breakable, write it out then burn it or talk it out. Release the built up emotion in whatever safe way works for you. Be accountable. A portion of some faulty decisions can be due to others. Unfortunately we can only control ourselves. Acknowledge and own your part of the situation. A major step in processing is coming to terms with events. Abandon all lies and disguises used to protect yourself from reality. It’s time to move forward in truth.

2. Avoid people who attempt to make you feel less than others because of your mistakes. These people constantly bring up your life mishaps to knock you down and make themselves feel better about their internal or external shortcomings. Some of these people may mean well. They feel it’s their duty to keep you from making the same decisions again. However as an adult you should not need an external “decision checker” or “messenger of the past”. Surrounding yourself with individuals who live in your past will slow down your healing process.

3. Seek professional help. There is no shame in seeking out a therapist, specialized counselor or coach. These professionals do not only exist to help those with specified diagnosis. They can provide spiritual counseling, career counseling, marriage, family, or relationship therapy, life coaching, financial counseling and even wellness counseling. Do your research, do not sit still in the past. Don’t let past ghost and skeletons scare you into a dark complacent hole. In most horror movies most demons can be defeated simply by operating in the light. In reality dark mental places facilitate dark feelings and behaviors. Move out of the shadows as gradually as you need and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

4. Next, start planning your next steps forward. Prepare for your comeback! No position is permanent. Write down plans, research, create vision boards, to do or perhaps not to do list and schedules. These activities can help you overcome several bad situations or “situationships”. For example, if you lost your job, planning is critical in finding a new job and managing your current financial responsibilities. If a toxic relationship has finally reached its end, after a healing period, make a list of qualities you want in a friend or companion. Remember what actions led to straying from your standards and avoid repeating the same mistakes. Anything important is worth planning for, plan for success in all that you desire.

5. Lastly, do not neglect your spirituality. Some incidents in life hit us unexpectedly. Unfortunately our on spot decisions may not always be the right ones. Forgive yourself. Have faith there is a blessing after whatever lesson. I personally have faith in a higher power. Spirituality is a personal connection. Choose to believe you can overcome anything in time. Avoid mental sabotage, speaking to yourself negatively, guilt, and shame. Let those emotions pass. Pray, meditate, speak healing into existence. Close your eyes, breathe deep, and let go.

No one on this earth is perfect. Imperfections can mold us into stronger and wiser human beings. Some decisions are more costly than others. Overcoming ghost of the past and skeletons are not easy task. It may take years or even decades, but the sooner you bury or burn the past the sooner you make space for the new, the positive, and the things in the light.
